Phenotypic Plasticity, Collaborative Project
Phenotypic plasticity is the ability of an organism to change its phenotype in response to changes in the environment.Fundamental to the way in which organisms cope with environmental variation, phenotypic plasticity encompasses all types of environmentally induced changes (e.g. morphological, physiological, behavioral, phenological) that may or may not be permanent throughout an individual’s lifespan.
Works will materialize as text, images, film and objects, manufactured from / created through a collaborative exchange between the participating artists and other invited artists. This exchange will be the very process of the production of the works, the structure of production will become the work itself; what is shared between the OaPaO Collective will only be a fragment of its original. What is known of its true original state will always be hidden from the individual. Using the Exquisite corpse as a technique each collaborator adds to a composition in sequence, either by following a rule or by being allowed to see the end of what the previous person contributed.
How do we chose to navigate this arbitrary sharing or censoring of information, what can become of these activities? The specific information that is shared encourages the artist to work outside of their practice, by investigating only what is given to them, never being able to conceive of the whole, developing these traces in detail to understand what it is or what it could be, only to provide the next step in its production. Through this type of collaboration (in which the material involved expands and contracts depending on the stage of the process) we hope to explore what it might look like and feel like to disrupt the learned structures that normally steer the movement of information.
The final result will be a curated exhibition. The individual works in show; printed material, films and sculpture will have been produced by all the collaborators from the project, with no work having a single author, as such the show will take the form of a collection/archive.
