Kilian Rüthemann makes sculptural interventions into architecture, using simple substances such as plaster, sugar or bitumen whose state often changes in the course of the creative process. Rüthemann’s processed-based work explores the sculptural and formal potential of conventional non-art materials, yet he is interested not in monumentality but in decay and dissolution, creating work whose mutability testify to their own transience. His pieces often dissolves the distinction between the making and displaying of artworks.
The presentation for ReMap4 will consist of several works conceived especially for the chosen location in Athens. It furthers Rüthemann’s investigation into making artworks in situ, to intervene with simple gestures on the architectural fabric that support them, as can be seen in his museum presentations at Haus Konstruktiv, Zurich (2012), Museum für Gegenwartskunst Basel (2010), Kunsthaus Glarus and Istituto Svizzero di Roma (both 2009).
